NFL QB Tiers

May 13, 2019

Since this trend is so popular, I have decided to a QB tier for some of the QBs in the league. This will not include rookies since they have not played a NFL snap yet.

Elite Tier:

Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, and Tom Brady

The Elite Tier is full of guys you would expect to be there. Patrick Mahomes who just won MVP of course needs be up in the Elite Tier. Drew Brees who was a MVP Candidate all last season needs be up there. Andrew Luck could be a stretch for the Elite Tier but he proved to be up there after throwing nearly 4600 yards and 39 TDs after being out the previous season. Russell Wilson who just became the richest QB in the league is also considered Elite. People say Aaron Rodgers had an off year last season, what they do not realize is that he was hurt all last season and he still threw for 4400 yard and 25 TDs. Last but certainly not last, the GOAT himself, Tom Brady. It is quite obvious why he is the Elite tier. Six fricken Super Bowl wins.

Great Tier:

Baker Mayfield,Ben Roethlisberger, Jared Goff, Matt Ryan and Phillip Rivers

This tier is for the guys who could be in the Elite Tier or once were. Baker Mayfield could be in the Elite tier by this time next year if the Browns live up to their expectations. Big Ben who did throw for 5k yards is not in the Elite Tier for a couple reasons, first he did lead the league in interceptions thrown, and second his team did fail to make the playoffs even though they had the best WR in the league at the time. Jared Goff can be considered controversial in this category after a pitiful Super Bowl performance and people say his system makes him better but I don't think so. Matt Ryan a former MVP is borderline Elite but his team makes him only in the Great Tier. Finally Phillip Rivers who was an MVP candidate all season but he is not in the Elite Tier because of his lack of team success over the years.

Above Average:

Matthew Stafford, Deshaun Watson, Cam Newton, Mitchell Trubisky, Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, and Kirk Cousins

The Above Average Tier is for guys who were one great or are not good enough to be in the tier above. Matthew Stafford who once was great has fallen off the last couple of seasons. Deshaun Watson can be in the great tier or in the Elite tier if he can fix his costly mistakes. Cam Newton a QB who I have watched closely throughout his career is above average because of inconsistency. As a Panthers fan I have seen the inconsistency at first hand. Mitchell Trubisky who did make a Pro Bowl this past season is slightly above average. He did make a jump in season two which can only help him become great or elite one day. Carson Wentz injury concern could be a reason he is in the above average tier. Dak Prescott can make big plays at moments but is only above average. Dak still has room to improve but we'll see what he can do if the Cowboys extend him. Kirk Cousins could be in the average catergory due to his lack big-time performance in big games. He has to prove that he is the man to lead the Vikings back into the playoffs.

Average:

Josh Allen, Nick Foles, Lamar Jackson, Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr, Sam Darnold, Joe Flacco, Marcus Mariota, and Alex Smith

I am going to split this Tier into two groups the Second Year Guys and the Veterans.

Second Year Guys:

Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Sam Darnold

These guys have not had enough time to prove anything in the NFL but can in the future. Josh Allen showed some sparks of what can make him great but his rookie season was lackluster at best. Lamar Jackson needs to work on his passing game if he wants to get out of this category. Sam Darnold has a new head coach to help his development out. As we've seen the last couple of years with second year guys getting Offensive-Minded coaches they have improved. We'll see if this is the case for Darnold

The Vets:

Nick Foles, Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr, Joe Flacco, Marcus Mariota, and Alex Smith

Nick Foles who's playoff success is the only reason he is considered average. We'll see what he can do as the starter of the Jaguars. Jimmy Garoppolo needs to prove himself this season of his deal that he got last offseason might look like a waste of money. Derek Carr needs to go back to his 2016 form where before he got injured led the Raiders to the playoffs. Joe Flacco is the definition of an average QB no need to explain more. Marcus Mariota has been on the downfall lately, at this time next year he could no longer have a starting job in the NFL. Alex Smith who might never play a snap in the league again due to injury.

Below Average:

Ryan Tannehill, Case Keenum, Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Josh Rosen, and Nick Mullens

This tier is for the guys who are guys who haven't performed at a high level yet or just not that good. Ryan Tannehill hasn't lived to the hype of top 10 and probably never will be. He just got traded to the Titans to be a backup and the same goes for Case Keenum being traded to the Redskins. Keenum had one good year in Minnesota which led him to getting a deal in Denver and he was average at best. Andy Dalton has not been good the last couple of seasons. Ryan Fitzpatrick had some Fitzmagic last season and turned that into a deal in Miami where he will compete for the starting job with Josh Rosen who was recently traded to Miami. Josh Rosen got replaced in Arizona due to lack of play but it wasnt't his fault. They had no O-Line and weapons for him. He will compete for the starting job with Fitzpatrick. Nick Mullens had a decent year for the 49ers after Jimmy G went down. He will be a good back-up for the Niners.

Trash:

C.J. Beathard, Brock Osweiler, Eli Manning, and Blake Bortles

These are the absoulte worst QBs out of the QBs available. There is no room why to explain why each of the guys are here.
